WMU Welcomes President of the Genoa Court

On 17 June, President Doumbia-Henry welcomed to WMU the Hon Sir Judge Enrico Silvestro Ravera, President of the Genoa Court and Lawyer, Professor Carlo Golda, from the University of Genoa.

Students in the Maritime Law & Policy and Maritime Energy Management specializations had the opportunity to attend a presentation by Judge Ravera who was a labor judge in the Costa Concordia case. Judge Ravera presented the investigative and legal issues surrounding the Costa Concordia maritime accident which “represents a unique and multidisciplinary case in terms of complexity of the actors involved,” he stated. Analyses of the key phases and decision-making processes were discussed by Judge Ravera, including an analysis of the verdict, with interpretation from Professor Golda. The students also had the opportunity to engage with Judge Ravera and Professor Golda in a moot court arbitration exercise.

Hon Sir Judge Enrico Silvestro Ravera has practiced law since 1987. From 2001 to 2010 he was appointed Councillor of the Labour Section of the Court of Appeal of Genoa. As of July 2010, he was appointed President of the Labour Law Section of the Court of Genoa and as of 4 July 2018, was appointed as President of the Genoa Labour Court. Judge Ravera has lectured in Labour law at the University of Genoa (1997-2008), as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Parma (2010) and between 2001-2002 and 2015-2016 at the School of Specialization for the Legal Professions at the University of Genoa.

Sir Carlo Golda is a Court of Cassation Lawyer, who has practiced over several decades in multiple areas of law including criminal law, particularly with respect to serious criminal offenses, insurance law, international law, navigation law, labour law and social security law. Since 2004, he has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Genoa. He is also a Civil Expert (TGOS) and in 2018 was appointed to the Civil Preparedness Section at the NATO Headquarters.
