REIMAGINE: World Oceans Day 2026

The United Nations (UN) celebrates World Oceans Day annually on 8 June as an opportunity to raise global awareness of the benefits humankind derives from the ocean and our individual and collective duty to use its resources sustainably. A healthy world ocean is critical to our survival.

“REIMAGINE: Beyond The World We Know, A New Relationship With Our Ocean,” is the theme for World Oceans Day 2026. According to the official World Oceans Day website, the theme calls for a renewed global commitment to the ocean as an essential part of human life and planetary wellbeing, highlighting the need to move beyond viewing the ocean as distant or separate, and instead embrace collective responsibility for its protection and sustainable governance.

The theme also reflects the transformative momentum created by the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, a historic, legally binding UN treaty designed to protect and sustainably manage marine life in international waters. Covering nearly half of the Earth's surface, the treaty officially entered into force on January 17, 2026, after reaching the required 60 ratifications, encouraging humanity to become active guardians of the ocean’s future through cooperation, innovation, and shared stewardship.

In recognition of World Oceans Day 2026, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia, Jr., President of the World Maritime University (WMU) provided the following video message:

“ ‘REIMAGINE: Beyond The World We Know, A New Relationship With Our Ocean’, is a powerful theme for World Oceans Day 2026. It reflects on the boundless wonder of the ocean as a source of life, inspiration, and global connection. A healthy ocean is essential to all life on Earth, and the reimagine theme challenges us to rethink how we govern, protect, and interact with the marine environment.

At the World Maritime University, we integrate ocean education across our academic programmes and research initiatives, encouraging critical thinking and innovation that support sustainable ocean governance and responsible maritime development. Protecting our ocean is a shared responsibility that calls for vision and collective action across borders. As we enter a new chapter in ocean action and stewardship, WMU remains committed to advancing knowledge, dialogue, and collaboration that supports a healthy and resilient ocean for the benefit of our entire planet.”

Since its founding, WMU has contributed to sustainable use of the oceans by focusing on the implementation and enforcement of IMO instruments to reduce accidents and ship-source pollution. Building on this strong foundation, ocean-related matters have become part of WMU’s mandate and are incorporated across all degree programmes. In addition, the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute carries out specialized research on ocean-related topics, and WMU faculty are contributing impactful research.
