IMO Expert Lectures on Maritime Safety

As part of the subject “Law and Policy in Maritime Safety, Security, and Labour,” on 26 March WMU students in the Maritime Law & Policy specialization had the opportunity to interact with Ms Aicha Cherif, legal officer at the IMO Legal Affairs Office, who delivered a lecture on National Implementation of Safety Maritime Regulation.

Ms Cherif’s lecture focused on national implementation of IMO safety regulations, including how regulations and guidance are developed at the IMO. The acceptance and entry into force of amendments, more specifically, the explicit and the tacit acceptance procedure and the timeline of the amendments, were also presented. An additional area of focus included implementing the IMO instruments in national legislation and what is considered effective implementation. The lecture closed with an example of the SOLAS Convention and how it might be effectively implemented nationally.

The Malmö MSc in Maritime Affairs is a 14-month programme with seven specializations: Maritime Education & Training; Maritime Energy Management; Maritime Law & Policy; Maritime Safety & Environmental Administration; Ocean Sustainability, Governance and Management; Port Management, and Shipping Management & Logistics. The three successive terms focus on specialization studies and a dissertation.
